I saw a film today oh, boy,
The English Army had just won the war.
A crowd of people turned away,
But I just had to look,
Having read the book,
I'd love to turn you on.

Indian media going orgasmic over a certain someone?

"Oh my god! He knows who Hugo Chavez is? Wow, that just makes him so well-read."

"He took off his shoes before entering someone's house! He offered his chair to a sixty-year old!"

"He reads books! And he buys them from Khan Market!"

This piece in the Outlook about the boy India is apparently in love with is nothing short of brilliant and flattering. The qualities listed above make this 39 year-old ready for the country's top office. One wonders if the author has met any average Indian boy or girl brought up in an urban, middle or upper middle class home. Please do read for a good laugh and perhaps, risk suffering from a complex!

  2. It is very easy to critisize the wrtings of other people. Why don't you make a comparission between him and a average Indian brought up in an urban, middle or upper middle class home. Finally we will be able to see someone who has not fogotten the traditions and values of our country instead of an old ma with a leg in his grave trying to leave enough money for hisfamily before he makes his last dive.

Just being well read does not make you capable for the top office. He has shown he can lead from th front with the changes that came about in UP.

  3. I am not denying that he may have led the Congress's efforts in UP and deserves credit for his work. My concern is that the media is not focusing on that very effort and instead choses to focus on aspects of his personality as exemplified by this piece and are in no way unique to Mr. Gandhi or make him especially capable of Prime Ministership.

I would be very happy if someone wrote a detailed piece describing Mr. Gandhi on the campaign trail.

  4. The media has done a good job by showing all his sides. It is very important for the people to know exactly what the person they are choosing is all about. It is important to have the qualities which Mr Gandhi has displayed.

The qualities of affection and respect show that he will make proper decissions for the masses. Cynicism does not exist in himself. He has the confidence and will accept the post when he knows he is ready for it. I salute him for this Many will say it is a political moe but they will not understand the depth of experience reqd to be at that post.

  5. Haha I think its expected there will be much fawning over him. Has the media shown all his sides? I think they've only been able to show his goody-two shoes image, which may well be what he is, but obviously his personal life is obscured.

I don't believe respect and affection give you the ability to make good (or proper as you say) decisions. Can he decide to sacrifice development in one part of the country for the betterment of others? Can he juggle all the personalities that will confront him within his cabinet, within his Opposition and in the international forum? We don't know yet.

I believe you're right that he is self-aware and that is a fantastic quality. The true picture will be realized not from his party organizational skills but when he is given an important ministry where tangible results are possible. I honestly hope that he does succeed when given such an opportunity and does not just 'accept the post' because of the 'confidence he has'.

P.S. Why does he have to buy such shitty and cliched books from Khan Market? That guy up front has a great collection. Why can't he buy like Ford Madox Ford or Hemingway or Chekov? Be unique, Rahul. And stop reading Friedman please. Path to disaster.
